Casting vs. Investment Casting vs. Powder Metallurgy vs. Metal Injection Molding (MIM)

There are numerous methods for manufacturing metal parts, but the differences between Casting, Investment Casting, Powder Metallurgy, and Metal Injection Molding (MIM) are often unclear.

 Each method has its own strengths and weaknesses; the optimal choice depends heavily on factors such as size, precision, strength, cost, and geometric complexity.

 This article compares these four methods and explains the applications for which each is best suited.

1.       What is Casting?

This is the most traditional manufacturing method, involving melting metal, pouring it into a mold, and allowing it to cool and solidify.

Features:

·       Capable of producing large parts

·       Low material costs

·       High design flexibility, but lower precision

 

2.       What is Investment Casting?

Also known as the "lost-wax process," this is the highest-precision method among casting techniques.

Features:

·       High precision for a casting method

·       Smooth surface finish

·       Good* for complex shapes

* Casting-specific defects (such as shrinkage cavities and gas porosity) can still occur.

 

3.       What is Powder Metallurgy?

A process in which metal powder is compressed in a mold and then sintered (heated) to solidify. It is widely used for automotive parts.

Features:

·       High dimensional precision

·       Well-suited for mass production

·       However, the material is porous with low airtightness

·       Suitable for small parts

 

4.       What is MIM (Metal Injection Molding)?

A process in which metal powder is mixed with resin, injection molding the mixture, and then debinding and sintering it.  Think of it as "plastic molding using metal."

Features:

·       Highest precision among the four methods

·       Unbeatable for intricate, fine details

·       High density (96–99%) and high strength

·       However, material costs are high
