Metal Injection Molding


Metal Injection Molding (MIM) is a technology where metal products are fabricated through a fusion of plastic injection molding technology and powder metallurgy technology; and it is classified as a powder metallurgy manufacturing technique. Porite’s MIM is a technology that mixes base material metal powder and several types of resin, known as binders, and processes them into a fluid state, after which they are given a shape with an injection molder and then sintered. This enables near net shape production of metal products with complex 3D shapes. These products are used for a variety of purposes ranging from hobby-related uses to the automotive and medical fields.

Automotive Parts

Automotive components requiring miniaturization while maintiaining complex shapes are great candidates for the MIM process. In addition metal injection molded parts achieve very high densities which is important for automotive components.

As electric motors become more and more common throughout a variety of products, the need to increase output while decreasing size is becoming more prevalent. Utilizing magnetic materials in a MIM part is a great way to achieve those goals.

Because MIM components still start from a metal powder form, the material flexibility that traditional PM offers is still available in metal injection molding. Porite mixes MIM compounds in house and can achieve many unique material combinations including stainless steel.
